Corman's Miracle' deal
... B-movie legend Roger Corman has landed the rights to "The Miracle of EDSA" (Milrose Publications), Col. William Edwards' historical (fictional) thriller. Corman will produce the flick under his Concorde/New Horizons banner.
"Miracle of EDSA" is about an American nurse who goes to the Philippines in search of her long-lost son - only to get caught up in a guerilla uprising. Corman is eyeing Sigourney Weaver for the lead, with Francis Doel writing the screenplay.
Bill Edwards began writing The Miracle of EDSA after a visit to the Philippines twelve years ago, shortly after his marriage. He and his wife, Mila Esguerra, had made the trip so that she could pack her personal belongings to bring back to the United States. While she was sorting through files of music, the author states, "I was left to myself in the home of her sister, who fortunately had a huge library. During the weeks that followed I read everything written by late nineteenth and early twentieth century Filipino authors, telling of their fight to throw off the yoke of a three-hundred year occupation by Spain, and of their final victory over the Spanish."His readings and his "admiration of the courageous victory of the unarmed People Power rebellion against Marcos' military forces in 1986" caused him to "start thinking about writing a story to highlight the issue of the Filipinos' struggle for freedom, within a fictional framework." Edwards has spent eleven years in travel with his wife throughout the Philippines to research the book, then in writing and polishing The Miracle of EDSA.
The author has first-hand experience in the scenes of combat which he depicts so vividly in his book. For over two decades, he flew jet fighter planes in the U.S. Air Force. He has been stationed at air bases in the United States, England, France, Germany, Turkey, India, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines. Among his decorations are two Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Bronze Star, and eight Air Medals. Mr. Edwards started writing while in the Air Force, and has concentrated on fiction since retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also has a strong connection and sympathy with the Filipino culture, through his marriage to Mila Esguerra, former diva with the Manila Opera House, and his extensive travels in the Philippines. In addition, Mr. Edwards sings with Mila's Choir, The San Francisco Bay Area Cultural Group. A recent proclamation issued by Mayor Willie Brown commended Mila Esguerra for "her history of accomplishments and expertise in the field of music," and proclaimed April 17, 1999 as Mila Esguerra Edwards Day in San Francisco.
The year 2000 marks the One-hundred-second anniversary of the Filipino people's Independence from Spain, so the subject of The Miracle of EDSA is an especially timely one. In the pages of his book, Mr. Edwards pays tribute to the desire for freedom which all people of the world have in common.
